STEP ONE in the construction of the
LAKA is building a
scaled down model.

The Kahuna Kalai Wa’a, Raymond Bumatay, is the man whose
design will represent our efforts. His knowledge of canoe design and
construction is unparrelled. Raymond is one of the last Kahuna Kalai Wa'a
building canoes on the Big Island today. When it comes to the canoe, and
everything about it, Raymond Bumatay will guide the efforts of this project. Our
plan includes selecting the log for the project. We hope to have this log
donated from the Alaskan territory and shipped to Raymond in Hilo where he is
presently preparing the Hale (canoe shed) for construction of the canoe. His
crew of craftsmen will cure the log for approximately two years prior to the
carving and design process. Accessory items: blocks, paddles, sails etc. will be
designed during the interim. The finished canoe will be blessed on the islands
and sailed to the San Diego Pacific Islander community and supporters.
LAKA, 'to
bring together as one'. We accept this huge project so today and tomorrow all
will continue to enjoy the "Spirit of Aloha" unique to the Hawaiians and his
ancestors.

sails.
Summer of 2001
Please join us in whatever your
specialty may be. "Together as one" we will accomplish this fantastic project
and enjoy it for many generations to come.

The first finished model finally arrived on the shores of San Diego in the
Summer of 2002. Here it's shown in the carrying case 5'
l x 3' w, and completely
disassembled for travel to the mainland.

A master canoe builder was called in to rebuild the model from scratch once
it arrive in San Diego. The work is so intricate that only a master builder
could be trusted to do the work properly. The result when finished, is a
beautiful museum piece created entirely by hand.
